Robert Opio,
Uganda Fund Project Director

Prior to joining the Uganda Fund, Robert Opio was Chief of Party for Care International’s A Stake in Our Future project in northern Uganda from January 2008 to December 2009. He managed the effort to empower communities in Amuru and Pader Districts and to monitor the government of Uganda’s Peace Recovery and Development Plan for Northern Uganda. As Team Leader for Food Security and Trade with ActionAid from July 2007 – January 2008, Mr. Opio led research and activities related to food rights, food security and trade throughout ten districts. At the National level he advocated for review and passing of the National Food and Nutrition Policy to ensure government involvement in providing food security for all citizens. For four years, Mr. Opio was the Volunteer Director of Capacity Building for the Development Training and Research Centre and for two years prior to that he was the Chief Executive Officer of a consulting firm that specialized in human rights, peace building, conflict transformation, research, advocacy, monitoring and evaluation. Other past positions in Uganda include: National Advocacy Coordinator, CARE International; Child Advocacy Project Officer, Save the Children Norway; Community Mobilization Intern, Food for the Hungry International; and National Coordinator and Senior Child Advocacy Project Officer, National Council for Children. Mr. Opio has extensive knowledge of land rights, intra-communal peace, participatory development, sanitation, negotiation, advocacy and governance among other topics central to northern Uganda’s recovery. A native Luo speaker, Mr. Opio is fluent in English and French.
